It’s not often that you find a Vietnamese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur that is worthy of mention. Sao Nam is one of the notable ones that deserve mountains of praise. Snugly located along Tengkat Tong Shin (walking distance from Bintang Walk), it can be easily missed because of its small signage. Nevertheless, we suggest that you look long and hard if you want to experience Sao Nam ‘s authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

  • The Vibe
    Tengkat Tong Shin houses rows of impressive heritage structures that have been around since the colonial times. The exterior still exudes a bit of history but to keep up with the times, the street has been modernized and turned into an entertainment area. Sao Nam retains most of its original structure. The interior is modern chic with some traditional elements especially with a charming wooden staircase that just looks as if it’s been there for a hundred years. Vibrant colours of yellow and brown are used with revolutionary posters and a bright logo of the rising sun on the walls. The atmosphere is one that is relaxed and casual and it’s more café-like rather than a restaurant.
  • The Food
    The menu boasts an extensive collection of Vietnamese delights, all of which are accompanied with a detailed description so there wouldn’t be any question on what you’re consuming. For a truly authentic Vietnamese experience, we suggest starting off with the Shrimp on Sugar Cane. Minced prawns and fish paste come together and is wrapped around a sugar cane stick. To fully savour the flavour of this dish, you will have to bite on the sugar cane stick for the tang. Another option would be the juicy Beef La Lot which bursts with lemongrass flavour. The chart topper would be the award winning and truly unique combination of Mangosteen and Prawn Salad. Hailing from South Vietnam , this dish is a plethora of different ingredients which includes mangosteen, grated fresh coconut, dried squid flown in from Vietnam , fresh tiger prawns and many more. Such a wide variety of ingredients can only mean one thing, lots and lots of different flavours in one bite. The less adventurous can opt for the tender and juicy beef stew. The fragrant chunk of beef is simmered with spices from Vietnam and the end result is a dish that mel ts in your mouth. The only drawback is that it might be a tad too sweet.
  • The Service
    The only word to describe the service staff is ‘stealth’. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by warm smiles but once you’re seated, they seem practically non-existent. It isn’t bad though because they get the job done without hovering and intruding. Food is served on time and the establishment is small enough for you to spot a waiter to hail down.

Sao Nam definitely tops the list of Vietnamese restaurants in Kuala Lumpur . Portions are slightly on the small side so it is advisable to order a variety of dishes for sharing. Do remember to make reservations if you’re planning to visit as lunch and dinner might get a little crowded. You wouldn’t want to miss your chance to get a hold of Sao Nam ‘s legendary Mangosteen and Prawn Salad.
